Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS)

Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) provide audible tones, verbal messages, and/or vibrotactile surfaces to aid pedestrians with blindness or other visual disabilities in crossing intersections with traffic signals.  APS devices are designed to automatically adjust to ambient noise so as to limit the noise impacts to nearby residents.

To request APS at a signalized intersection or to express concerns about an existing APS installation, please submit a request online at myVDOT or contact VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (1-800-367-7623).  You may also submit a complaint using the procedures described on VDOT’s Americans With Disabilities Act – Section 504 web page.
