VDOT Operations Program

2022 Operations Performance Report >

Operations is a core part of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s mission.

The VDOT Operations Program is customer focused to maximize system reliability, maintain system access and ensure safe travel.

Our goal is a robust and reliable transportation system that keeps users informed and supports multi-modal options. This gives Virginia a strategic advantage when competing economically with other states’ and countries.

We have five Transportation Operations Centers across the commonwealth. They monitor traffic and travel conditions, dispatch personnel to respond to incidents and events, coordinate traffic information, coordinate traffic signals, and guide travelers to make informed choices about when and how they travel.

The centers use technology and Intelligent Transportation Systems to keep Virginia moving, including:

  • Traffic cameras
  • Changeable message signs
  • Travel time and traffic flow sensors
  • Road Weather Information Systems
  • Ramp meters
  • The Safety Service Patrol
  • Signal coordination / Arterial Operations
  • 511 Virginia

Virginia operates seven tunnels, 11 moveable bridges and three ferries.

VDOT is an emergency response organization. We respond to any incident or weather that impacts our transportation system, including hurricanes and winter storms.

We can move resources across the state to meet the needs of motorists and our transportation system during emergencies.

Our incident management personnel, area headquarters, residencies and Safety Service Patrols are on the front lines of the operations program. They improve our incident response, clear active incidents, remove fallen trees, repair washed out roadways, remove snow and ice and help people in trouble on our system.

We help develop traffic management plans to manage work zones and major special events, such as auto races, college football games and festivals. Our Customer Service Center is available to 24/7 to address concerns, receive service requests and answer questions.
