    VDOT’s compensation program is designed to attract, motivate and retain talented and productive employees by applying an innovative mix of base pay, variable pay and non-monetary options. The agency strives to compensate skilled, high-performing employees at rates competitive with their local labor market while balancing internal alignment and exercising responsible fiscal stewardship for the tax paying residents of the Commonwealth.

    An average new employee electing family health care coverage has a benefits package with an estimated value of 78 percent of their annual salary. At $40,000 a year, the employee actually receives $71,200 in total compensation. The VDOT total rewards package includes compensation, benefits, recognition and other valuable options, including flexible work schedules.

    Healthcare

    Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) employees participate in the Commonwealth of Virginia Employee Benefits Program.

    This program includes medical, dental, prescription drug, mental health coverage and a flexible benefit program. 

    Disability

    VDOT provides short- and long-term disability benefits at no cost. There's a one-year waiting period for new hires and re-hires. This program is administered by the Virginia Retirement System (VRS).

    • Investigating and analyzing unstable foundations, solid-rock slope failures and groundwater problems.

    • Inspecting project sites to ensure materials meet the needs of the job and that construction is performed according to plan

    • Designing, evaluating and providing recommendations to ensure proper road surfaces to protect the safety of all
