The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), in partnership with the Town of Bluefield, studied ways to enhance safety, accessibility, and travel on US 460 and College Avenue in 2019/2020. View the finalized study here.
The area currently presents transportation challenges that impact mobility for all users:
• Motorists experience travel delays due to congestion and operational issues
• Driveways are closely spaced with inadequate turn lanes
• Intersections have poor sight distances for motorists
• There are high rates of motorist collisions
• Gaps in the sidewalk network and limited crosswalks make walking and biking challenging
The primary goal of the study is to provide the Town of Bluefield with cost-effective transportation improvements that preserve and enhance these key transportation corridors. Transportation improvements developed during this study will be submitted to SMART SCALE for funding consideration. Learn more about SMART SCALE.
The study identifies investment recommendations that will help preserve and enhance this key transportation corridor due to the important role it plays in the region as a significant commercial area for the town.
This study area covers US Route 460 and College Avenue between Route 720 and Leatherwood Lane in Bluefield.
