Route 667 (Catterton Road) over Piney Creek in the Free Union area of Albemarle County was reopened to traffic on Oct. 2, 2023. The project was completed under-budget and the structure is now open to all legal-weight vehicles.
Under a $909,000 construction contract, VDOT contractor McClain & Co., Inc. of Culpeper replaced the existing, structurally deficient timber-deck bridge, which was built in 1932. With this project, a new box culvert was installed, along with a slightly widened concrete slab bridge and new asphalt riding surface.
In August 2023, the road was closed to through traffic near Route 665 (Buck Mountain Road) with a posted detour.
The Route 667 bridge carries approximately 130 vehicles per day.
A design public hearing was held for this project on Oct. 15, 2019.
Benefits
This project will replace an existing substandard bridge on a state-maintained roadway that serves residential areas, local businesses and industries.
If not replaced, the existing bridge will continue to deteriorate and will eventually have to be closed to vehicles.
