In Design: Route 702 (Fontaine Avenue Extended), Albemarle County
Cost and schedule ►
VDOT held a public hearing for this project on Sept. 17, 2019. Public meeting materials are available in the resources section (click on the previous meetings link).
This project will replace the existing Route 702 (Fontaine Avenue Extended) bridge over Morey Creek in Albemarle County.
The existing concrete slab bridge was built in 1932 and is considered structurally deficient.
VDOT proposes replacing the bridge with a box culvert. During construction, Route 702 will be reduced to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals on each end of the bridge.
Construction is expected to begin in summer 2022.
The Route 702 bridge carries approximately 1,700 vehicles per day.
Benefits
This project will rehabilitate an existing substandard bridge on a state-maintained roadway that serves residential areas, local businesses and industries.
If not rehabilitated, the existing bridge will continue to deteriorate and will eventually have to be closed to vehicles.
