Under Construction: Route 708 bridge over North Fork Hardware River, Albemarle County

Cost and schedule ►

Beginning the week of Nov. 6, 2023, a VDOT contractor will rehabilitate the substandard Route 708 (Red Hill Road) bridge over the North Fork Hardware River, just north of the town of Scottsville in Albemarle County. Motorists can expect lane closures with flagging at the Route 708/Route 20 (Scottsville Road) intersection as well as posted speed limit reductions. During construction, vehicles wider than 11 feet will not have access to Route 708 from Route 20.

As construction progresses, temporary signals will be installed control traffic at the intersection. Motorists should use caution approaching the work zone and obey all traffic controls and signage.

This project involves widening the bridge’s foundation, rebuilding the superstructure with new steel beams, and replacing the concrete deck riding surface. The improved bridge, originally built in 1959, will feature wider travel lanes and include standard concrete railings. The anticipated completion date is Dec. 5, 2024.

This rehabilitation project will be funded through the State of Good Repair program.

Benefits

This project will rehabilitate an existing substandard bridge on a state-maintained roadway that serves residential areas, local businesses and industries. If not rehabilitated, the existing bridge will continue to deteriorate and will eventually have to be closed to traffic.
