Recently Completed: Waterloo Bridge, Culpeper Co./Fauquier Co.

The project to restore the 143-year-old Waterloo bridge over the Rappahannock River at the Culpeper-Fauquier county line was completed Feb. 23, 2021, more than two months ahead of schedule.

Route 613 (Waterloo Road) is open to through traffic. The bridge has a posted weight restriction of 12 tons.

Under a $3.65 million construction contract, Corman Kokosing Construction Company of Annapolis Junction, Md. dismantled, removed, repaired and reinstalled the single-lane truss bridge. The project was completed on-budget.

Background

The 143-year-old Waterloo bridge was closed to traffic Jan. 15, 2014 due to its deteriorated condition.

The truss structure, made of wrought iron and built in 1878, was posted for a three-ton maximum vehicle weight prior to the closure. Despite that restriction and numerous repairs through the years, advancing age and the weather took their toll on the bridge’s supporting members.

Following a structural inspection, VDOT bridge engineers determined that the deterioration was too severe to continue to allow traffic on the bridge.

This project will return the Waterloo bridge to service.
