Coming Soon: Lee Hill School Drive and Old Dominion Parkway Roundabout

Cost and schedule ►

Public outreach ►

This project includes converting the existing intersection at Route 635 (Lee Hill School Drive) and Route 1035 (Old Dominion Parkway) to a mini roundabout with pedestrian crossings, lighting, and a bus pad for the FXBGO! bus stop. The purpose of this project is to reduce conflict points and enhance safety. A mini roundabout is typically used in lower speed residential areas with primary differences from a regular roundabout being a smaller diameter and fully mountable center island to facilitate large truck movements.

During construction, intermittent tractor-trailer and oversized vehicle detours will be in place.

This proposed intersection design is known as a mini roundabout. Watch a video on mini roundabouts and visit VDOT’s Innovative Intersections page to learn more about this design, which is intended to reduce the number of points where vehicles can cross paths and eliminates the potential for right-angle and head-on crashes.

Benefits

A mini roundabout has been chosen to improve the safety and efficiency of the intersection.

Roundabouts are safer than traffic signals and conventional stop-controlled intersections because traffic can continually and efficiently flow through the intersection and vehicle operating speeds are lower. It reduces the number of points where vehicles can cross paths and eliminates the potential for right-angle and head-on crashes. Additionally, roundabouts help reduce air pollution and fuel use compared to a signalized intersection due to reduced idling and less acceleration and deceleration.
