Traffic alerts ►
The project replaced the Route 207 southbound bridge over the Mattaponi River in Caroline County.
Benefits
The existing bridge was built in 1957 and is structurally deficient. Structurally deficient does not mean a bridge is unsafe for travel, but it is an indicator that a bridge needs maintenance or repair work to improve its condition.
The project replaced the existing structure with a new concrete bridge on steel beams.
Major Milestones
March 2020: Construction begins, and 45 mph temporary work zone speed limit is posted
May 2020: Route 207 southbound bridge closes to traffic, and Route 207 is reduced to one lane in each direction with all traffic crossing the northbound Mattaponi River bridge
September 2021: New bridge opens, and all construction is complete
