This project replaced the the existing timber deck bridge over Rickenaw Creek on Route 619 (Owens Mill Road) in King and Queen County. The new bridge is a pre-stressed concrete slab with concrete abutments and concrete pilings.

The previous structure, built in 1967, was structurally deficient.

During construction Route 619 (Owens Mill Road) was closed at the bridge. Detour signs directed drivers to use the following routes around the road closure:

  • Route 619 (Owens Mill Road)
  • Route 623 (Indian Neck Road)
  • Route 640 (Lyneville Road)
  • Route 721 (Newtown Road)
  • Route 660 (Sorghum Road)

The project completion date was extended from its original targeted completion in May 2020 to July 31, 2020.

The bridge opened to traffic on July 21, 2020.

Benefits

The new concrete structure will provide drivers with slightly wider travel lanes, paved approaches, and new bridge markers.
