In Design: Route 626 (Leeland Road) Widening and Pedestrian and Bicycle Upgrades

Two transportation projects are fully funded through the construction phase along Route 626 (Leeland Road) in Stafford County.

Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funds will pay to build a 5-foot-wide sidewalk on the east and west side of Leeland Road from the Deacon Road intersection to Julian Drive (as shown in blue on project concept). It will also convert existing sidewalk on Leeland Road between Primmer House Road and the entrance to the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) station to a 10-foot-wide shared use path.

A combination of state funding programs (SMART SCALE and revenue-sharing) and locality funds will accomplish the following:

  • Widening Leeland Road between Julian Drive and Walnut Drive to a three-lane section, with one travel lane in each direction, and a shared two-way left turn lane in the center
  • Continues 5-foot-wide sidewalk along both sides of Leeland Road from Julian Drive to Walnut Drive
  • Installs a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon pedestrian crossing across Leeland Road at Walnut Drive, with a 5-foot-wide sidewalk continuing along the west side of Leeland Road toward the Leeland Station subdivision
  • Extends bike lanes along both sides of Leeland Road from Deacon Road to Portland Drive

Both projects would be accomplished under a single construction contract, which would be advertised to bidders in 2027, with construction underway in 2027-2028. Project design work will begin in 2024, and a design public hearing to share proposed design plans is anticipated to be held in 2025.

An existing footpath in the Leeland Station subdivision between Walnut Drive and Primmer House Road on the west side of Leeland Road will remain, with existing landscaping.

Installing a pedestrian crossing across Leeland Road at the Walnut Farms Parkway/Perth Drive intersection, and a pedestrian crosswalk across Portland Drive, may be installed as separate initiatives to these projects. Installation of these crossings will require right of way access from the Leeland Station subdivision.
