In Design: Route 628 (Spring Cottage Road/Durrell Road) over Mattaponi River Bridge Replacement

Cost and schedule ►

In March 2023, Route 628 (Spring Cottage Road/Dorrell Road) closed at the bridge over the Mattaponi River, which is located at the King and Queen and King William county line. During a routine inspection, crews identified significant deterioration in key bridge elements and closed the bridge for motorist safety.

Motorists should follow signs posted along the recommended detour route:
  • Route 600 (West River Road)
  • Route 360
  • Route 721 (Newtown Road)
  • Route 639 (Eastern View Road)

The detour route is approximately 22 miles long. Signs and barricades are posted to direct travelers around the closure.

Design work is underway to replace the bridge's entire superstructure, which will replace the bridge beams, deck, rails, and the travel surface. The bridge's piles will remain in place.

The project is expected to be advertised to potential bidders at the end of 2023 and expect the project's contractor will mobilize on site around spring 2024 to reopen the road to traffic by spring 2025.

An average of 295 vehicles a day cross the bridge on Dorrell Road/Spring Cottage Road, according to a VDOT traffic count. The 60-year-old bridge has two travel lanes, and is 198 feet long.
