On June 11, 2021, the Northern Neck region experienced a severe rain event that produced about 10 inches of rain, which is estimated to be a 200-year storm event. Around 25 state-maintained roads in the region sustained damage.

A bridge over Cat Point Creek on Route 637 (County Bridge Road) in Richmond County was one of the roads affected by this severe storm.

The Cat Point Creek bridge was closed on June 11, 2021, after water was seen passing under and behind the bridge's abutment. Additional bridge inspections, including an underwater inspection, found significant damage to the bridge abutment and piers, and loss of the stream bed around the bridge piers. County Bridge Road has remained closed to through traffic with a posted detour since this date.

Due to the severity of damage to the bridge, VDOT determined that a total bridge replacement provided the best long-term service option. The estimated $4.9 million replacement cost is being funded through the state bridge maintenance and operations fund.

The bridge replacement project is under construction. Work began in December 2022.

County Bridge Road will remain closed during construction, until the new bridge reopens by April 26, 2024.

The new bridge will a concrete structure. It will be 28 ft. wide and 110 ft. long.
