Under Construction: Route 17 Overpass Replacement at I-95, and Route 17 Widening

This project is replacing the existing two-lane interstate overpass on Route 17 with a four-lane bridge. The existing interstate overpass is structurally deficient, and is in need of replacement.

Route 17 will be widened to four travel lanes to just east of the Hospital Boulevard/Germanna Point Drive intersection. 

A shared-use path for pedestrians will be built along the southern side of Route 17 and sidewalk will be built along the northern side of Route 17. Pedestrian crossing equipment and crosswalks will be added at crossing locations.

Route 17 traffic was recently shifted to begin crossing I-95 using the first half of the newly constructed overpass. Following demolition to remove the previous two-lane overpass, construction will begin to build the second, final half of the new bridge. 

Overpass Demolition: October 2022

Crews have begun bridge demolition to remove the previous Route 17 overpass. Demolition work is estimated to take four weeks to complete, through late October 2022, weather permitting. 

Nighttime operations will result in noise impacts to nearby residents.

Due to the risk of falling debris, demolition work requires lane closures and intermittent full traffic stops on I-95 below the overpass. These lane closures and stops have been scheduled to occur overnight due to the daytime traffic volumes on I-95.  

Drivers can expect overnight lane closures on I-95 northbound and southbound through late October 2022 as demolition is underway. On several weekday evenings, double lane closures with overnight traffic stops are scheduled to occur throughout the month.
