Arterial Preservation Plan Details
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), in partnership with the George Washington Regional Commission and affected localities, conducted an arterial preservation plan of Route 301 in King George County and Route 301 and Route 207 in Caroline County.
The plan's scope included Route 301 from the Potomac River to the county line in King George, and Route 301 from the King George line to the intersection of Route 1 and Route 207 in Caroline.
Over the next decade, Route 301 and Route 207 will be critical alternate routes during periods of construction on Interstate 95. These primary routes are also a viable choice for commuters traveling to and from the Washington, D.C., area from the Fredericksburg region.
The recent decision by the Maryland Transportation Authority to widen the Governor Harry W. Nice Bridge over the Potomac River to four lanes placed an emphasis on the need to establish an access management plan for these primary routes in Virginia.
The purpose of the study is to improve safety and efficiency in this corridor, encourage economic development in the two counties, create a project list for future SMART SCALE projects, and reduce future retrofit projects.
The plan reviewed existing conditions including crash analysis, traffic operations and access locations. The plan also examined future land use and safety and operations.
