Coming Soon: Virginia Central Railway Trail Bridge

SMART SCALE Dashboard

Cost and schedule ►

This trail project will extend the existing Virginia Central Railway Trail around one mile to the west, from its current endpoint near the Idlewild neighborhood in the City of Fredericksburg to a new trail access point near the Kingswood neighborhood in Spotsylvania County. A bridge will be installed over Hazel Run.

The project’s schedule and funding plan is currently under development. The City of Fredericksburg submitted an application to Virginia’s SMART SCALE transportation funding program for this trail project in the program’s first round of available funding. Based on project scoring, it was included in the Six-Year Improvement Program for Fiscal Years (FY) 2017-2022.

Several project advertisement opportunities have resulted in bids that exceeded the available budget of $328,652.

In May 2022, the Fredericksburg Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (FAMPO) committed an additional $306,348 toward the project, and the Commonwealth Transportation Board will vote on adding these funds to the Six-Year Improvement Program at its June 2022 meeting.

Staff at the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the City of Fredericksburg are working to jointly finalize the schedule to advance this project to construction. The City of Fredericksburg has requested VDOT take over administration of the project.

This project page will be updated once a new schedule is finalized.
