Recently Completed: Route 13 (Lankford Highway) Safety Improvements

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) completed safety improvements on Route 13 (Lankford Highway) in Accomack and Northampton County.

A series of improvements included the following intersections: 

• Route 13 (Lankford Highway) with Route 695 (New Temperanceville Road/Saxis Road) in Accomack County
• Route 13 (Lankford Highway) with Route 175 (Chincoteague Road) in Accomack County
• Route 13 (Lankford Highway) with Parkway in Accomack County

Benefits 

The improvements will enhance safety in the corridor and create an efficient system to support a robust economy for residents in Accomack County and Northampton County.

Route 13 (Lankford Highway) and New Temperanceville Road/Saxis Road:

• The purpose of the project was to improve safety by lengthening turning lanes, permanently closing access to Lankford Highway at Old Temperanceville Road and installing a traffic signal at New Temperanceville Road.

Route 13 (Lankford Highway) and Chincoteague Road:

• The purpose of the project was to improve safety by installing curbs and reducing access points at the intersection of Lankford Highway and Chincoteague Road.

Route 13 (Lankford Highway) and Parkway:

• The purpose of the project was to improve safety by installing a traffic signal at the intersection of Lankford Highway and Parkway and eliminating the crossover in front of the Eastern Shore Community College.

• Advertisement for bids in spring 2020
• Completed 5/28/2021

Route 13 (Lankford Highway) and New Temperanceville Road/Saxis Road:

• Advertisement for bids in spring 2020
• Completed widening of right turn lane at US 13 northbound and Temperanceville Road intersection
• Completed construction of concrete median island
• Completed construction of sidewalk
• Completed 5/28/2021

Route 13 (Lankford Highway) and Parkway:

• Advertisement for bids in spring 2020
• Completed concrete median barrier
• Removed crossover at the community college
• Paved portions of the median at the intersection of Route 13 and Parkway
  
• Completed 5/28/2021
