In Design: Route 501 and Route BUS 360 Intersection Improvement Project, Halifax County

Route 501 (L.P. Bailey Highway) currently intersects with US Route 360, in an at grade intersection. The project area has seen numerous crashes resulting in injuries and has been identified by VTrans as a mid-term need for safety improvements. Converting to a roundabout from a stop/yield type of intersection could decrease fatal-and-injury-related crashes by up to 80%, per VDOT’s Crash Modification Factors.

Benefits 

The proposed project is to construct a single lane roundabout at the intersection of LP Bailey Memorial Hwy, N Main St, and Bethel Rd in the Town of Halifax to increase safety and network connectivity. Back St will be reconstructed/realigned with the aforementioned intersection to create a 4-legged intersection as opposed to the existing one with three legs. Bike and pedestrian improvements throughout the project area will further enhance safety and connectivity for those modes of travel as well.
