Studies: South Boston Transportation Safety and Operations Study

Cost and schedule ►

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is studying ways to improve safety and operations around the Town of South Boston. The study includes recommendations for improvements to US 501 (Halifax Road) at Greens Folly Road, US 501 (Halifax Road) at Route 129 (Old Halifax Road), Route 129 (Old Halifax Road) from Centerville Park Road to Dan River Church Road, US 501 (Wilborn Avenue) at Webster Street, 2-way conversion of US 501 (Main and Broad Streets) in downtown South Boston, and the intersection of US 501 (Main Street) and US 58 (Bill Tuck Highway) in Riverdale.

The purpose of this study is to identify and develop potential transportation improvements within the study area. The study will investigate traffic patterns, bicycle/pedestrian accommodations, existing plans, and community needs when developing recommendations.

The study area includes major corridors that feed into US 501 in the Town of South Boston. The project is bound by Greens Folly Road to the north, US 58 (Bill Tuck Highway) to the south, and Dan River Church Road to the east.

Benefits

A transportation safety and operations study has been requested to identify investment recommendations that will help enhance transportation mode choice, improve traffic flow, and increase safety in the transportation network. The Town of South Boston’s center of activity is on a significant north/south highway (US 501), making the Town an ideal candidate for such a study.
