Proposed: Route 7 at Culmore Pedestrian Safety Improvements in Fairfax County

Potential pedestrian safety improvements are being evaluated along Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) between Glen Carlyn Road and Glen Forest Drive in the Culmore area due to community concerns about pedestrian safety.

In August 2022, VDOT, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation and Fairfax County Supervisor Penny Gross hosted a community meeting with around 160 residents. Several potential pedestrian safety improvements were presented at the meeting, including:

• New sidewalks along westbound Route 7 in front of the Liberty gas station (5930 Leesburg Pike) and in front of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church, and along eastbound Route 7 in front of the Crown gas station (5929 Leesburg Pike)
• New signalized crosswalk across Route 7 located between Glen Carlyn Road and Magnolia Avenue, pending recommendation from the county-administered crosswalk study
• Speed limit study for the 40 mph speed limit segment between the Falls Church and Alexandria city limits
• Adding a fourth leg of intersection crosswalk at Route 7 and Glen Carlyn Road

Since the above meeting, the following has occurred:

• The speed limit was reduced from 40 mph to 35 between the Falls Church and Alexandria city limits
• The sidewalk along westbound Route 7 in front of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church was constructed
• The fourth leg of intersection crosswalk at Route 7 and Glen Carlyn Road was added
• The westbound Route 7 sidewalk in front of the Liberty gas station received county funding
