Franconia Road and Commerce Street STARS Study in Fairfax County
Assessing improvements along Franconia Road from Backlick Road to Commerce Street/Loisdale Road, and along Commerce Street from Amherst Avenue to Franconia Road
About the Study
This STARS (Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions) study is assessing potential safety and operational improvements for a half-mile of Franconia Road (Route 644) between Backlick Road and Commerce Street/Loisdale Road, and for a half-mile of Commerce Street between Amherst Avenue and Franconia Road.
The study is assessing existing traffic and safety conditions in the two corridors, including several congestion issues along Franconia Road related to the I-95 interchange. The study team sought public input regarding corridor priorities during the first round of public involvement in June. This feedback will be used to help develop potential safety and operational alternatives that will be evaluated and presented during the second round of public involvement scheduled this winter.
Within the study limits, Franconia Road averages about 69,000 vehicles a day and Commerce Street averages 19,000.
