What's Being Done

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) have initiated a study of the Interstate 64 corridor from I-95 in Richmond to I-664 in Hampton.

The purpose of this study is to identify transportation needs within the I-64 corridor and to evaluate the impacts of proposed improvements to meet those needs.

The study area is approximately 75 miles long.

Project Updates - Section A

On January 13, 2017, FHWA issued a Record of Decision (ROD) for the fourth section (noted as 'Section A') to be implemented from the Interstate 64 Peninsula Study Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS).The ROD identifies the alternative selected for the section that extends from approximately Exit 200 in Henrico to Exit 205 in New Kent.

On August 10, 2016, FHWA issued a Record of Decision (ROD) for the third operationally independent section to be implemented from the Interstate 64 Peninsula Study Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS).The ROD identifies the alternative selected for the section that extends from approximately Exit 242 to Exit 234 in York County.

On June 8, 2015, FHWA issued a Record of Decision (ROD) for the second operationally independent section to be implemented from the Interstate 64 Peninsula Study Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS).The ROD identifies the alternative selected for the section that extends from approximately Exit 247 in the City of Newport News to Exit 242 in York County.

Project Updates - Section I

On April 21, 2014, FHWA issued a Record of Decision (ROD) for the first operationally independent section to be advanced from the Final Environment Impact Statement (FEIS). This section is approximately six miles within the termini located west of Exit 255 (Jefferson Avenue/Route 143) in the east and just east of Exit 247 (Yorktown Road/Route 238) in the west. Since the issuance of the ROD, VDOT has advanced planning and design of the first section. This advanced work has identified the funding for improved shoulders within the section. These improved shoulders could accommodate additional capacity during peak hours and other select times, in addition to supporting emergency access along the interstate. Given this new information, VDOT plans to submit a Request for an Amended Record of Decision (Request) to document the planned change in implementing an interim build condition of the first operationally independent section. Prior to submitting the request, VDOT made the draft document available for public review and comment.

What is an open forum citizen information meeting?
An open forum citizen information meeting (open house) encourages one-on-one discussions in an informal setting. This style of meeting has an easy, open and encouraging effect on citizens and can be very helpful in building a sense of consensus between the Department and citizens. At the meeting, people familiar with all facets and features of the project visually display their information. The purpose of the open forum may be to suggest solutions or may simply be to give information and facts. The process is highly interactive with technical people presenting and fielding questions from communities, individual citizens or small groups.
