Recently Completed: Route 221 Intersections Improvements - Bedford County

This project focused on improving safety and operations at three signalized intersections. Two intersections are on Route 221 in Bedford County in the Salem District and one is at Route 460 Business (Timberlake Road) and Route 622 (Waterlick Road) in Campbell County in the Lynchburg District.

In Bedford County, this project focused on improving two adjacent signalized intersections in the Forest area on Route 221 at Route 1425 (Graves Mill Road) and at Route 1426 (Gristmill Drive).

At the Route 221 and Graves Mill Road intersection, the improvements included:

• Constructing a new right turn lane from westbound Graves Mill Road onto northbound Route 221
• Reconfiguring the intersection to provide dual left turns from westbound Graves Mill Road onto southbound Route 221
• Adding pedestrian signals, crosswalks and sections of sidewalk
• Replacing the existing traffic signal with a new one

At the Route 221 and Gristmill Drive intersection, the improvements included:

• Extending the right turn lane from westbound Gristmill Drive onto northbound Route 221
• Reconfiguring the intersection to provide dual left turns from westbound Gristmill Drive onto southbound Route 221
• Adding pedestrian signals, crosswalk and sections of sidewalk
• Upgrading the existing traffic signal

In Campbell County, this project focused on improving the existing Route 460 Business (Timberlake Road) intersection with Route 622 (Waterlick Road).

On Timberlake Road, the improvements included:

• Constructing a single offset left turn lane in each direction
• Paving and striping the area between the offset left turn lanes
• Upgrading signals

On Waterlick Road, the improvements included:

• Widening Waterlick Road to help the left turning movements (specifically tractor trailers) from Timberlake
• Constructing raised medians to help with access management
• Upgrading signals
• Extending a right turn lane to create more storage
