The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is proposing a project to construct a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Route 904 (Starkey Road) and Route 679 (Buck Mountain Road) in Roanoke County.

The purpose of the project is to improve traffic flow, reduce delays and accommodate future growth by constructing a single-lane roundabout. Sidewalks and crosswalks also will be provided as part of the project.

The project entails replacing the current intersection with a roundabout. This roundabout will meet current design standards and provide concrete truck aprons in the center and on the outside to accommodate tractor-trailers and other large vehicles.

A roundabout’s yield-control design improves efficiency, enhances safety and means fewer stops, less delays and shorter queues compared to other intersection designs. They also allow for landscaping and beautification.

Approximately 8,600 vehicles use this intersection each day with significant congestion occurring especially during peak travel times. Daily traffic at the intersection is expected to increase to approximately 12,500 vehicles per day in 2040.

Construction is currently scheduled to begin in spring 2025 but early delivery is possible.

VDOT requested and received public comment in October 2020. For additional information on this project, view the information below:
