Under Construction: Augusta County – Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) Northbound Widening

This project constructs two additional travel lanes on Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) in Augusta County near Staunton. The project will provide Route 262 motorists with two northbound lanes and two southbound lanes between the interchanges with Route 613 (Old Greenville Road) and Route 252 (Middlebrook Avenue). Construction takes place within existing VDOT right of way.

The 0.74-mile widening project will create two new northbound lanes parallel to the existing road, which currently has a single lane in each direction between Route 613 and Route 252. When construction is complete, northbound traffic will utilize the new lanes and southbound traffic will use both existing lanes.

Funding for this project was originally allocated to a Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) intersection at Route 262 and Route 613 (Spring Hill Road) north of Staunton. Community feedback showed a strong preference to not move forward with the RCUT project, but to use the project resources to improve traffic mobility along Route 262 in the area of Route 252.

Following the public involvement process, project resources were redirected to improvements along Route 262. VDOT staff worked closely with the Augusta County Board of Supervisors as part of soliciting community consensus on the project location, purpose and need.

This project has a total estimated cost of $4,446,437, which includes $500,000 for engineering and design, $175,000 for right of way, and $3,771,437 for construction.

Benefits 

This project will enhance safety and improve traffic flow by extending the divided highway portion of Route 262 northward, and by providing a full acceleration lane for motorists entering Route 262 southbound from the Route 252 interchange.
