This project replaced the existing truss bridge on Route 11 over the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, located in the Town of Mount Jackson in Shenandoah County. The bridge is located approximately a half-mile north of Route 720 (Wissler Road).
The previous truss bridge was built in 1933 and had reached the end of its service life. The entire bridge structure was approximately 228-feet long, of which 150 feet contained the truss. The bridge deck contained 24 feet of clear width.
The new bridge was built just east of the old truss bridge. The new structure is a 245-foot single span bridge with a deck containing approximately 40 feet of clear width.
During the design phase of this project, the total estimated cost was $6,672,631, including $1,097,437 for preliminary engineering, $433,917 for right of way and $5,141,277 million for construction.
In 2014 Route 11 had an average daily traffic count of 5035 vehicles per day. By the design year of 2038 the estimated average daily traffic volume is 6000 vehicles per day.
Benefits
This project enhances safety on Route 11 by replacing a deteriorating truss bridge structure with a new two-lane bridge that is able to support modern traffic both in volume and vehicle weights. If not replaced, the existing bridge would have continued to deteriorate and would eventually have to be closed to vehicular traffic.
