Highway Advisory Radio

radio tuned to 1680 AMThe Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) operates Highway Advisory Radio transmitters in our Hampton Roads District to keep motorists informed on traffic and travel conditions and construction information.

Transmitters broadcast on 1680 AM.

The broadcasts are aired 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Transmitters are strategically located along interstate highways or near major construction projects.

Signs notify drivers that a transmitter is nearby and of the frequency.

Permanent transmitters are typically located on the interstate and can be updated instantly during an emergency, such as a hurricane evacuation or major traffic incident.

They are controlled from one of five Traffic Operations Centers across the commonwealth.

Highway Advisory Radio is one element of the commonwealth’s traffic management system.

That system includes:

  • Electronic variable message signs
  • Traffic sensors
  • Traffic cameras
  • Freeway incident response teams
