Safety Rest Area

The New Kent East Coast Gateway Safety Rest Area opened Aug. 28, 2003. It replaced the old complex, which was built in 1976.

Designed and built by the W.C. English Co., the new facility's architecture keeps with the traditional colonial style commonly used throughout this historic region.

It features an 11,000 square-foot building with restrooms, an indoor vending area and an enclosed lobby.

There is also a Virginia State Police office.

A children's play area, and picnic and pet areas are available, as is travel and traffic information.

It is open 24 hours per day, 365 days a year, to all vehicles.

Welcome Center

The Welcome Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. We are closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Information is available about local and state attractions, weather and traffic.

Lodging reservations can be made between 8:30 a.m. and 4:45 p.m.
