Americans with Disabilities

Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal anti-discrimination statute designed to remove barriers which prevent qualified individuals with disabilities from enjoying the same employment opportunities that are available to persons without disabilities.

Tile I of the ADA prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities regarding job application procedures, hiring, advancement, or discharge of employees; employee compensation; job training; and other terms, conditions, and privileges of employment.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is obligated to fully comply with the reasonable accommodation requirements of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and the ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA) of 2008.

Under these laws, employers must provide a reasonable accommodation to the known physical or mental limitations of qualified employees or applicants with disabilities, unless to do so would cause undue hardship.

VDOT is fully committed to providing reasonable accommodations to employees and applicants for employment to ensure that individuals with disabilities enjoy equal access to employment opportunities.

To learn more about VDOT’s commitment to providing reasonable accommodation to qualified individuals with disabilities, contact Janice F. Curtis, ADA accessibility coordinator, at 804-225-3834.
