Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Bentley Licensing

Q: Why is there a need to replace the existing licensing for Bentley software?

A: At the end of this year, SELECTServer will be retired for Bentley desktop applications, for both deployed and hosted servers. As a result, license pooling will no longer be available to you unless your organization upgrades to applications utilizing the Subscription Entitlement Service, Bentley’s new licensing service. Applications supporting the Subscription Entitlement Service include all CONNECT Edition and all SELECTSeries 10 versions.

Applications that are not upgraded when the SELECTServer is retired on December 31 will be required to move to a machine-based licensing environment, involving the registration of the individual licenses per machine.

Q: How do I get new Bentley licensing to use on VDOT projects?

A: With the upcoming change in the current licensing practice and the End of Support (EOS) of older Bentley software versions, VDOT will require current license users (Consultants/Contractors) working on an active VDOT project to update their Bentley software to SELECTSeries 10 versions or CONNECT Edition releases when applicable and request new licenses for the software used. A new LD-893 form is available on the VDOT website: http://vdotforms.vdot.virginia.gov/SearchResults.aspx?strFormNumber=LD-893

Q: What information do we need to provide VDOT to receive new licenses?

A: Any Consultant or contractor with an active VDOT project will need to fill out and submit the new LD-893 form. This form requests project information, VDOT Project Manager information and also includes a new spreadsheet attachment for licensing requests. The new licensing from Bentley is individual user based instead of the former one license per company or group.

Q: What is required on the spreadsheet for licenses?

A: The spreadsheet requires the current email address and computer name for each user license. The current software and software versions that we will provide licensing for are listed on the right-hand side of the spreadsheet. If your company is using a different version number or needs a Bentley software application that is not listed on the spreadsheet, there is an area to provide that information. The license will be created based on the information supplied on the spreadsheet.

Q: Once I complete the LD-893 what is required?

A: Once the LD-893 and spreadsheet are completed, please submit this information to your VDOT Project Manager. They will verify the information and approve the request. The VDOT Project Manager will then submit the request to VDOT CADDSupport. VDOT CADDSupport will create the individual licenses for each email address / computer name on the spreadsheet. Once they are created the licenses will be emailed to the Point of Contact (POC) listed on the bottom of the spreadsheet.

Q: How long will it take to receive the new licenses?

A: CADDSupport will provide licenses as quickly as possible, usually within 24 hours, barring any problems or system issues.

Q: My company already has a licensing agreement with Bentley. How will VDOT licenses work with our agreement?

A: We realize that many companies already have license agreements with Bentley and work with numerous other DOT’s and companies utilizing Bentley software. The license that we provide for you is a .BELIC license. This license will allow it to be imported into MicroStation when working on VDOT projects. Once you are finished working on the VDOT project, you can reinstall your companies licenses to continue working on non-VDOT projects.

Q: What if I have trouble with my VDOT licenses?

A: Please contact the CADDSupport Helpdesk at (804) 786-1280 and they will put you in touch with our licensing support staff.

Q: How long does the license last?

A: The software license is valid for one year from date of issuance.
