VDOT is prepped and ready for snow

BRISTOL – With snow in the forecast, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are prepared with the needed supplies, equipment and work force for snow removal operations.

The 12-county Bristol District has approximately $16.3 million set aside for winter weather, with almost 700 pieces of equipment such as trucks, loaders and motor graders ready to clear roads of snow in the Bristol District.

Because the precipitation is anticipated to begin as snow and temperatures will be within the range where salt is effective, VDOT Bristol will follow its standard protocol and this afternoon will pretreat Interstate 81, Interstate 77 and some high-volume primary highways.

Key reminders:

  • Allow crews time and space to plow and treat roads.
  • Make alternate arrangements to avoid travel during adverse weather.
  • Clear any snow and ice from your vehicle before driving.
  • Ensure headlights are on and speeds align with conditions.
  • Visit org for the latest road conditions before traveling. If possible, avoid travel until precipitation stops and road conditions improve.

Interstates, primary roads and major secondary roads with vital emergency and public facilities, or those with high traffic volumes will be cleared first.
