VDOT CAUTIONS MOTORISTS WHO MUST DRIVE EARLY MONDAY
Interstates, major highways mostly clear in Central Va., but overnight refreeze is a concern

CULPEPER — Early-morning drivers in Central Virginia should expect to encounter icy patches on area roadways after below-freezing temperatures overnight froze any moisture remaining on roadways. Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance and allow extra time for any essential travel early Monday morning.

At 5 a.m. Interstate 64 in Albemarle and Louisa counties and I-66 in Fauquier County are clear of snow and ice, although icy patches are likely, particularly in areas where there is not much traffic.

Major highways across the nine counties of the Virginia Department of Transportation are mostly clear, although in Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Louisa and Rappahannock counties drivers may find patches of snow and ice on many primary highways. On secondary roads, any snow or slush remaining on the roads has likely frozen overnight so drivers should use extreme caution on those roads early this morning.

VDOT and contract crews worked overnight to make all roads passable. Early Tuesday morning crews are monitoring the interstates and primary highways and addressing any slick conditions. Other crews are working to complete plowing on secondary routes, particularly low-volume rural roads and neighborhood streets.

VDOT encourages motorists to delay non-essential travel until mid-morning Monday. If travel is a must, drivers are reminded to use VDOT’s free 511 tools to find out about road conditions and to clear all of the snow from their vehicle — including the roof — before traveling.

Additional information about winter-weather preparations and response can be found at www.virginiadot.org/travel/snow.asp. Local updates are posted to Twitter.com/VaDOTCulp and the district’s snow emergency webpage.

VDOT’s Culpeper District includes the counties of Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock.
