FREDERICKSBURG DISTRICT: VDOT CREWS TO PRE-TREAT I-95, PRIMARY ROADS AHEAD OF POTENTIAL WEEKEND STORM
Trucks will apply a salt brine solution to Interstate 95 travel lanes and ramps in the Fredericksburg area between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Motorists should be alert for a mobile Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) operation tomorrow to pre-treat Interstate 95 and interstate ramps in the Fredericksburg area in advance of possible winter weather this weekend.
VDOT crews are also pre-treating primary roads across the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula regions.
Pre-treatment of I-95 in the Fredericksburg area will be underway between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10.
Trucks pre-treating I-95 travel together at approximately 35 mph. The mobile operation is escorted by a law enforcement vehicle.
Slower travel speeds are required to spray the salt brine onto the interstate with precision, and to ensure an adequate amount is absorbed in the pavement.
Roads are expected to remain dry prior to the onset of potential winter weather this weekend, allowing VDOT to pre-treat major travel routes.
Pre-treatment prevents ice from bonding to the pavement during inclement weather, which reduces the risk of hazardous travel conditions.
Travelers are asked to keep a close eye on news and weather reports this weekend for possible changes in road conditions.
VDOT is monitoring weather reports, and staff will be staging equipment and treatment materials for quick deployment in the event winter weather affects travel in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.
Drivers are encouraged to check 511Virginia before starting a trip for real-time information about road conditions in Virginia.
Motorists can download the free mobile 511 app for Apple and Android devices to stay connected, visit www.511virginia.org, or reach 511Virginia by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia.
