FULL TRAFFIC STOPS ON ROUTE 17 EXTENDED ANOTHER TWO WEEKS
All Route 17 traffic will be stopped in 30-minute intervals at the I-95 interchange in Stafford County between midnight and 3 a.m. for bridge demolition

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has extended the schedule of full traffic stops on Route 17 in Stafford County for another two weeks to allow crews to finish demolishing the former Interstate 95 northbound overpass at Exit 133.

Weather permitting, all traffic on Route 17 northbound and southbound will be stopped intermittently for up to 30 minutes between midnight and 3 a.m. on weekday evenings starting tonight, Oct. 21, through early Friday, Nov. 1 for the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project.

Traffic will be allowed to clear in between each 30-minute interval.

In September, I-95 northbound traffic was shifted to a new bridge near Exit 133 in a temporary traffic pattern. Once demolition of the former I-95 northbound overpass is complete, crews will begin building a new northbound overpass.

Route 17 travelers are encouraged to use the most convenient alternate route to avoid delays, depending on their destination.

Message boards provide advance notice of the lane closures and possible delays. Virginia State Police are assisting with traffic control in the work zone.

In addition to the overnight full traffic stops, motorists can expect the following lane closures on Route 17 this week near Exit 133:

Route 17 Northbound

  • Monday – Thursday, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. (ending Friday morning)

Route 17 Southbound

  • Monday – Thursday, 9 p.m. to 10 a.m. (ending Friday morning)
