NEW WORK ZONE PATTERN STARTING SUNDAY NIGHT AT ROUTE 17 AND I-95 IN STAFFORD COUNTY
Inside left lane on Route 17 northbound and southbound will close at Exit 133/Falmouth in Stafford County beginning Sunday, Feb. 24 for construction of new Route 17 overpasses
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Route 17 northbound and southbound will be narrowed slightly at the Interstate 95 overpasses in Stafford County beginning the evening of Sunday, Feb. 24 to provide space for construction crews to build new interstate bridges.
The inside left lane will close on Route 17 northbound and southbound in the vicinity of the overpasses. Work crews will be working behind concrete barriers in this area.
Route 17 northbound will continue to have three travel lanes at the interchange. The far right lane will become a shared through lane and merge lane for the I-95 ramps.
On Route 17 southbound, two travel lanes will remain open in the work zone.

The Interstate 95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project is building three new southbound lanes on I-95 from just north of Exit 133 in Stafford to just south of Exit 130 in the City of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County.
Three new southbound lanes will be built in the median of I-95 to carry through traffic. The three existing I-95 southbound lanes will be converted to lanes for local traffic. The $132 million project will also replace the I-95 overpasses bridging Route 17.
Construction began in August 2018 and will be completed in May 2022.
Work zone signs and barrels will guide motorists on Route 17 through the work zone.
The inside left lanes of Route 17 will remain closed 24 hours a day through the end of the project in May 2022.
Weather permitting, lane closures are scheduled for Route 17 at the following dates and times to allow crews to prepare for this work zone, and to shift traffic into the new pattern:
Sunday, Feb. 24 – Tuesday, Feb. 26 (ending early Wednesday, Feb. 27)
- Double lane closure on Route 17 northbound and southbound between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings. Crews will remove existing travel lane markings, install new lane markings, and install concrete barrier.
Drivers are asked to use additional caution on Route 17 near I-95 as they navigate the new work zone pattern. Brief delays may occur at peak hours due to the reduction in Route 17 travel lanes.
