ROUTE 609 (SMOKEY ROAD) IN KING WILLIAM CLOSES APRIL 29 FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT
Crews will be replacing a structurally deficient bridge over Herring Creek; Motorists should follow posted detour route over estimated 12 weeks of work
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Route 609 (Smokey Road) in King William County will close to through traffic at the bridge over Herring Creek on Monday, April 29, to allow Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews to replace the crossing.
Smokey Road will be closed to through traffic for an estimated 12 weeks, weather permitting.
Signs are posted to guide motorists along the recommended detour route, which is approximately 6.2 miles:
- Route 600 (West River Road)
- Route 628 (Dorrell Road)
- Route 608 (Locust Hill Road)
VDOT's state forces bridge crew will replace the existing steel beam timber deck with a new concrete structure.
The current bridge was built in 1943 and has a weight posting of 26 tons for single unit vehicles and 34 tons for tractor-trailers.
Smokey Road carries an average of 209 vehicles a day, according to a 2014 VDOT traffic count.
