EXPECT OVERNIGHT DELAYS AT FALMOUTH BRIDGE JULY 23 AND JULY 28
Brief, intermittent traffic stops on Route 1 planned between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. on the evenings of Thursday, July 23 and Tuesday, July 28

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. Route 1 traffic will be briefly stopped overnight on the Falmouth Bridge between Stafford County and the City of Fredericksburg on the evenings of Thursday, July 23 and Tuesday, July 28.

Motorists on Route 1 northbound and southbound will be stopped at the bridge for up to 15-minute intervals between 10 p.m and 5 a.m. both evenings.

Emergency vehicles will be permitted to pass through the work zone at all times. Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control.

Traffic will be cleared between each intermittent closure.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and contractor crews are conducting scheduled bridge load testing as part of the bridge’s routine maintenance and inspection. All traffic must be stopped on the bridge to conduct the test.

Additionally, Route 1 northbound or southbound will be reduced to a single lane on several evenings to allow for bridge testing equipment to be installed. Motorists will encounter a single lane closure at the following dates, times and locations:

Tuesday, July 21 – Wednesday, July 22

  • 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. – Route 1 northbound single lane closure

Wednesday, July 22 – Thursday, July 23

  • 8 p.m. – 9 a.m. – Route 1 southbound single lane closure

Thursday, July 23 – Friday, July 24

  • 8 p.m. – 7 a.m. – Route 1 southbound single lane closure
  • Full, intermittent stops of Route 1 northbound and southbound for up to 15 minutes between 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Friday, July 24 – Saturday, July 25

  • 9 p.m. – 7 a.m. – Route 1 southbound single lane closure

Saturday, July 25 – Sunday, July 26

  • 9 p.m. – 8 a.m. – Route 1 northbound single lane closure

Sunday, July 26 – Monday, July 27

  • 8 p.m. – 9 a.m. – Route 1 southbound single lane closure

Monday, July 27 – Tuesday, July 28

  • 8 p.m. – 9 a.m. – Route 1 southbound single lane closure

Tuesday, July 28 – Wednesday, July 29

  • 8 p.m. – 9 a.m. – Route 1 southbound single lane closure
  • Full, intermittent stops of Route 1 northbound and southbound for up to 15 minutes from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Wednesday, July 29 – Thursday, July 30

  • 8 p.m. – 9 a.m. – Route 1 southbound single lane closure

On the evenings of July 23 and July 28, when full intermittent stops are scheduled, travelers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and consider using Interstate 95 as an alternate route to avoid delays.
