FREDERICKSBURG DISTRICT: CONSTRUCTION THIS WEEK TO IMPROVE I-95
Expect overnight lane closures on I-95 starting tonight, April 13 through early Saturday, April 18
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and its contractors continue construction to improve Interstate 95 in the Fredericksburg area this week.
Starting tonight, April 13, through early Saturday, April 18, overnight lane closures are scheduled to advance work on the Exit 140 Diverging Diamond Interchange, the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project and the I-95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project in Stafford County.
Milling and paving on I-95 southbound in Caroline County will also start this week. Click here to read the news release.
The I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project is currently building the future I-95 northbound overpass of Route 17. The project team will need to close the I-95 southbound Exit 133B ramp to Route 17 northbound towards Warrenton to shift traffic to a temporary alignment. The exit ramp will close at 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 16 and reopen 5:30 a.m. Friday, April 17. Click here for a map of the detour.
Message boards are posted along I-95 to alert motorists to the lane closures and possible delays ahead.
Lane closures have been scheduled for the following evenings, weather permitting:
Monday, April 13 – Tuesday, April 14
I-95 Southbound from Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) to Exit 133 (Route 17)
- 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – Double lane closure
- 4:30 a.m. – 10 a.m. – Single lane closure
I-95 Southbound from Mile Marker 117 to I-95 Southbound Safety Rest Area
- 8 p.m. – 9 p.m. – Single lane closure
- 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. – Double lane closure
Tuesday, April 14 – Wednesday, April 15
I-95 Southbound from Exit 143 (Route 610/Garrisonville Road) to Exit 140 (Courthouse Road)
- 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. – Single lane closure
I-95 Southbound at Exit 140 (Courthouse Road)
- 6 a.m. – 10 a.m. – Single lane closure
I-95 Southbound from Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) to Exit 133 (Route 17)
- 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – Double lane closure
- 4:30 a.m. – 10 a.m. – Single lane closure
I-95 Northbound from Rappahannock River Bridge to Exit 133 (Route 17)
- 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – Single lane closure

- 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – Single lane closure
I-95 Southbound from Mile Marker 117 to I-95 Southbound Safety Rest Area
- 8 p.m. – 9 p.m. – Single lane closure
- 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. – Double lane closure
Thursday, April 16 – Friday, April 17
I-95 Southbound Exit 133B (Route 17/Falmouth) Exit Ramp CLOSURE
- 9 p.m. – 5:30 a.m. Exit ramp towards Warrenton will close to slightly shift traffic to a temporary alignment. Traffic will be detoured to Exit 133A to Route 17 southbound to merge to I-95 northbound auxiliary lane to exit to Route 17 northbound towards Warrenton. Click here for detour map.
I-95 Northbound from Rappahannock River Bridge to Exit 133 (Route 17)
- 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – Single lane closure
I-95 Southbound from Mile Marker 117 to I-95 Southbound Safety Rest Area
- 8 p.m. – 9 p.m. – Single lane closure
- 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. – Double lane closure
Friday, April 17 – Saturday, April 18
I-95 Northbound from Rappahannock River Bridge to Exit 133 (Route 17)
- 9 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. – Single lane closure
Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control near the work zones.
