FREDERICKSBURG DISTRICT: ICY ROAD CONDITIONS EXPECTED TONIGHT, THURSDAY MORNING
As temperatures drop overnight, wet pavement is expected to freeze; VDOT crews remain on duty to patrol and treat roads for icing and hazardous conditions
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews in Fredericksburg District will continue working overnight to treat icy road conditions that are expected to develop as temperatures drop below freezing.
Motorists are encouraged to postpone travel if possible on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning until temperatures rise and road conditions improve.
Travelers should plan to check 511Virginia before starting a trip to see real-time conditions in their area.
Any moisture remaining on roads is expected to freeze overnight. Pavement may be coated with a glaze of transparent ice that is difficult to see.
VDOT crews will patrol Interstate 95 and state-maintained roads to monitor conditions, and will apply salt to reduce icing, and sand to improve motorist traction.
Slick conditions are more likely to be present on lower-volume secondary roads, and on hills, curves, bridges, overpasses and ramps.
Icing may also lead to downed trees and debris in the road. To report a road hazard, contact VDOT’s Customer Service Center 24 hours a day at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623) or online at https://my.vdot.virginia.gov.
On Wednesday afternoon, heavy rain was falling across the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. Roads are currently clear with bare pavement, but crews are spot-treating for isolated icy patches, as well as responding to reports of standing water and flooding.
Merry Point and Sunnybank Ferries
The Merry Point Ferry and Sunnybank Ferry are currently operating according to their normal schedule. For real-time updates on ferry service this week, check 511Virginia.
