PEDESTRIAN IMPROVEMENTS TO BEGIN ON ROUTE 17 SOUTHBOUND AT GLOUCESTER POINT ON MONDAY, AUGUST 17
Drivers may encounter intermittent single lanes closures in the work zone Mondays through Fridays, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin work to enhance pedestrian safety at two locations on Route 17 southbound at Gloucester Point.
Improvements will include the construction of 2,500 feet of sidewalk, pedestrian crosswalks and two additional pedestrian and handicapped accessible ramps along Route 17 southbound between Lafayette Heights Drive to Bellhaven Drive. Pedestrian crossings will be added on Route 17 at Route 1206, Route 1240, and Route 1218. Improvements will also be made at the entrance of two private developments located within the work zone on Route 17 southbound.
During construction, drivers along Route 17 southbound should be alert to construction crews and equipment working along the shoulder at various locations Mondays through Fridays, 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Some construction activities may require a single lane closure in the work zone. Flaggers will be on site to direct traffic through the work zone, if needed.
The $800,000 pedestrian improvement project is funded through VDOT’s Smart Scale program. When the project is complete in January 2021, the improvements will complete the pedestrian enhancements that were started during the Route 17 widening project completed in 2011.
