ROUTE 1 BRIDGE REPLACEMENT OVER POTOMAC CREEK IN STAFFORD COUNTY BEGINS IN JUNE
Drivers should be alert for construction activity in the work zone; Route 1 will remain four lanes during project, with only periodic single lane closures needed

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Construction is starting in June on a two-year project to replace a bridge on Route 1 over Potomac Creek in Stafford County.

Replacement is needed due to the condition of the existing bridge, which was built in 1930 and is structurally deficient. The new bridge over Potomac Creek is estimated to cost $6.9 million and is being funded through the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) State of Good Repair program.

Route 1 will remain four lanes during the bridge placement project, with only periodic single lane closures needed. Keeping all four lanes open is critical at this location to allow Route 1 to serve as an alternate route to Interstate 95. Traffic will be shifted slightly in the work zone as construction progresses.

Starting June 1, travelers can expect to see work zone signs posted and construction equipment mobilizing on Route 1 at Potomac Creek. This Route 1 bridge is located between Interstate 95 interchanges at Route 630 (Courthouse Road) and Route 8900 (Centreport Parkway).

The replacement bridge will have four travel lanes, but will have a slightly wider bridge deck.

Around 21,000 vehicles a day travel Route 1 in the section where the Potomac Creek bridge is located, according to a 2019 VDOT traffic count.

The project is expected to be complete in July 2022.
