ROUTE 17 OVERPASS AND WIDENING IN SPOTSYLVANIA CONTRACT AWARDED
Commonwealth Transportation Board has awarded a $15.3 million contract to widen Route 17 and replace an interstate overpass in Spotsylvania County

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – At its October meeting, the Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded a $15.3 million contract to begin construction on a project to widen a portion of Route 17 (Mills Drive) in Spotsylvania County, and replace an interstate overpass.

The project contract was awarded to Fielder’s Choice Enterprises Inc., of Charlottesville.

Route 17 will be expanded to four travel lanes between Latitude Street and just east of the Hospital Boulevard/Germanna Point Drive intersection.

A shared-use path for pedestrians will be built along the southern side of Route 17 and sidewalk will be built along the northern side of Route 17. Pedestrian crossing equipment and crosswalks will be added at intersection crossing locations.

The existing two-lane overpass of I-95 will be replaced with a four-lane overpass with space for pedestrians to cross using sidewalk and a shared-use path. The current bridge was built in 1962 and is structurally deficient.

Construction crews are anticipated to mobilize in late December 2020. The new overpass, travel lanes, sidewalk and path will open in early 2024.

View the project designs online at the project page.

Around 28,000 vehicles a day travel on Route 17 in the project area.
