ROUTE 223 BRIDGE AT GWYNN’S ISLAND CLOSED TO TRAFFIC
Bridge over Milford Haven connecting Gwynn’s Island to mainland Mathews County is currently stuck in the open position due to expanding steel in high temperatures

UPDATE (5:25 p.m.) -The Route 223 bridge to Gwynn's Island in Mathews County has reopened to vehicle traffic. Crews successfully cooled and closed bridge's movable swing span. The bridge will remain closed to marine traffic until 7 p.m.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Route 223 bridge over Milford Haven that connects Gwynn’s Island with mainland Mathews County is currently stuck in the open position, and traffic is stopped in both directions.

The bridge has a moveable swing span, which opens frequently to allow marine traffic to pass.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are pumping water on the bridge’s steel grid deck to cool its temperature, which will allow crews to force it closed. Pumping equipment was staged at the bridge earlier this week for a rapid response.

Real-time updates on the bridge’s status are available on 511Virginia.
