ROUTE 301 INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENT PROJECT BEGINS IN KING GEORGE COUNTY
Several existing turn lanes on Route 301 at Owens Drive and Bennion Road will be extended to reduce congestion and driver delays
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Construction will begin on Monday, June 1, on a project to improve the intersection of Route 301, Owens Drive and Bennion Road in King George County.
The $1.1 million project will extend several existing turn lanes on Route 301 northbound and southbound. Lengthening these turn lanes adds storage space for a greater number of vehicles, which is anticipated to reduce delays and congestion for Route 301 through traffic.
The intersection is located near the Gate B entrance to the Naval Support Facility South Potomac at Dahlgren.
Three turn lanes will be extended at the intersection:
- Route 301 southbound left turn lane
- Route 301 southbound right turn lane
- Route 301 northbound left turn lane
Lane closures will be scheduled during off-peak travel times, with no lane closures permitted between 5-9 a.m. and 3:30-7 p.m. on Mondays-Fridays.
Next week, no lane closures are scheduled. Motorists should be alert for construction crews working along the road shoulder to install work zone signs and silt fencing, and to stage equipment and materials. Construction will be complete by Nov. 20, 2020.
The project contractor is CES Consulting, LLC.
Project Background
King George County submitted an application to build this project through Virginia’s SMART SCALE transportation funding program.
SMART SCALE was established to choose the right transportation projects for funding and ensure the best use of limited tax dollars. Potential projects that have been determined to meet a need identified in VTrans – the state’s long-range multi-modal transportation plan – are scored based on safety, congestion, accessibility, land use, economic development and the environment.
Once projects are scored and prioritized, the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) has the best information possible to select projects for funding.
An earlier SMART SCALE-funded project extended the Route 301 northbound right turn lane onto Bennion Road in 2017.
