WORK ZONE SPEED LIMIT TO BE POSTED ON ROUTE 207 NORTHBOUND IN CAROLINE COUNTY
Temporary 45 mph speed limit will be posted on Monday, March 23 on Route 207 northbound near Mattaponi River bridge
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A temporary speed limit reduction will be posted next week in a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) work zone on Route 207 northbound at the Mattaponi River bridge in Caroline County.
Starting Monday, March 23, a temporary 45 mph speed limit will be posted on Route 207 northbound in the work zone.
Message boards are posted to alert travelers to the upcoming speed limit reduction. The 60 mph speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph until construction is complete.
On Monday, work will begin on a $7.9 million project to replace the existing Route 207 southbound bridge over the Mattaponi River with a new concrete bridge and beams.
First, before the southbound bridge closes to traffic, Route 207 northbound will be reduced to a single lane between Holly Hill Drive and Sycamore Hill Lane. This lane reduction will allow crews to prepare to shift Route 207 southbound traffic to cross the Mattaponi River on the northbound bridge.
Prior to the traffic shift, crews will remove trees, install concrete barrier and complete other construction activities on Route 207 northbound. During this time, Route 207 southbound will remain two lanes, and will retain its 60 mph speed limit.
The Route 207 southbound bridge is anticipated to close in late May 2020. At that time, crews will shift southbound traffic to cross the Mattaponi River on the northbound bridge, with one travel lane open in each direction.
Northbound and southbound traffic will be separated by a barrier.
After the traffic shift, Route 207 will be reduced to two travel lanes through July 2021, with all construction complete by September 2021.
When the new southbound bridge opens, crews will then shift southbound traffic to the new structure and re-open all four lanes on Route 207.
