DEMOLITION OF I-95 NORTHBOUND OFF-RAMP BRIDGE WILL BEGIN NEXT WEEK IN STAFFORD COUNTY
Expect overnight delays on Route 17 for several weeks starting Sunday, Jan. 8 as crews begin to remove the former I-95 overpass as part of I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing Project

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. Demolition of the former Interstate 95 northbound off-ramp bridge over Route 17 at the exit 133 interchange in Stafford County will begin next week.

The I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project is rebuilding the remaining Route 17 overpass in need of replacement at the interchange.

Starting Sunday, Jan. 8, travelers on Route 17 should anticipate overnight lane closures and intermittent full traffic stops for several weeks through early March to allow crews to remove the former overpass.

Demolition of the former overpass will occur during the overnight hours since lane closures and traffic stops on Route 17 are required to safely complete this work.

Nearby residents can expect noise to occur with bridge demolition. Crews will complete demolition activities as quickly as possible to minimize the disturbance to residents and minimize travel delays to drivers.

Construction of the new I-95 northbound overpass will begin once demolition is complete.

Crews are anticipating at least six weeks to remove the former I-95 northbound ramp structure.

Most recently, crews opened the new I-95 northbound bridge over the Rappahannock River and shifted all traffic to the three lanes between exit 130 (Route 3) and exit 133. Crews closed the original Rappahannock River bridge to complete maintenance work.

In addition to the bridge work, construction will continue over the next 18 months to finish building the local travel lanes between interchanges, as well as build a fourth northbound lane between exit 133 (Route 17) and exit 136 (Centreport Parkway).

The $132 million project is scheduled to be complete in spring 2024.
