EMERGENCY PIPE REPLACEMENT BEGINS TOMORROW ON TAVERN RUN ROAD IN WESTMORELAND
Road will be closed at Newtons Mill Run for an estimated three weeks; drivers should follow posted detour
UPDATE (July 20, 2023): Route 616 (Tavern Run Road) in Westmoreland County has reopened to traffic at Newtowns Mill Run. An emergency pipe replacement is complete.
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – On Wednesday, June 14, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close a portion of Route 616 (Tavern Run Road) in Westmoreland County to through traffic for approximately three weeks for an emergency pipe replacement at Newtons Mill Run.
The project will replace the existing metal drainage pipes with three concrete pipes.
During construction, drivers will be detoured approximately seven miles using the following routes:
- Route 615 (Jerusalem Church Road)
- Route 604 (Sandy Point Road)
- Route 202 (Cople Highway)
- Route 612 (Nomini Hall Road)

Construction activity will be underway from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays
Weather permitting, the road is expected to reopen to traffic in early July 2023 when the pipe replacement is complete.
Message boards have been placed to alert motorists to the road closure.
According to a recent VDOT traffic count, approximately 300 vehicles a day travel on this portion of Tavern Run Road.
