NEW PARK & RIDE COMMUTER LOT NOW OPEN IN SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY
Nearly 700 additional parking spaces now available for ridesharing at the intersection of Route 1 and Commonwealth Drive, near the exit 126 Interstate 95 interchange

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A new Park & Ride commuter lot in Spotsylvania County opened today at the intersection of Route 1 and Commonwealth Drive, providing nearly 700 parking spaces for ridesharing within two miles of Interstate 95.

With the completion of this $16.5 million project, there are now a total of 4,732 commuter parking spaces available in Spotsylvania across five Park & Ride commuter lot locations.

At Route 1 and Commonwealth Drive, the new lot includes:

  • 14 accessible parking spaces
  • 10 motorcycle parking spaces
  • A bicycle rack
  • A 10-foot-wide shared use path along Route 1
  • Sidewalk along Commonwealth Drive

The lot provides a dedicated area for transit arrivals and departures, and carpool and vanpool pickups and drop offs. The lane is also designed to accommodate slugging, which is an informal, instant carpooling practice where three or more people rideshare to use high-occupancy road facilities.

Turn lane improvements were built on Route 1 and on Commonwealth Drive, which will assist vehicles entering and departing the commuter lot from the intersection. A right-in, right-out entrance on Route 1 southbound provides access directly into the new commuter lot.

About the Project

The new Park & Ride commuter lot was funded through a combination of Virginia’s SMART SCALE program, Spotsylvania County funds, and a grant from the I-95/395 Commuter Choice program, which is funded with toll revenue from the I-95/395 Express Lanes facility.

Construction began in August 2021. The project contractor was Allan Myers Va., Inc. of Glen Allen, Virginia.

The lot is near residential communities in the Lee’s Hill, Massaponax, and Jackson Gateway areas of Spotsylvania. It is approximately two miles south of the exit 126 I-95 interchange, and a new U.S. Veterans Health Administration outpatient clinic under construction.

Additional Park & Ride commuter lots in Spotsylvania are located at the Virginia Railway Express station near Route 17 (Mills Drive) and Route 765 (Crossroads Parkway), at the intersection of Route 3 and Route 627 (Gordon Road), near the intersection of Route 3 and Route 639 (Salem Church Road), and at Route 208 (Courthouse Road) and Route 1248 (Houser Drive). View a statewide online map of Park & Ride commuter lots for more information.
