FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Route 628 (Dorrell Road/Spring Cottage Road) closed today at the bridge over the Mattaponi River, located at the King and Queen and King William county line, and will remain closed for an emergency bridge repair project.
During a routine inspection, crews identified significant deterioration in key bridge elements, and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has closed the bridge for motorist safety.
Motorists should follow signs posted along the recommended temporary detour route:
- Route 600 (West River Road)
- Route 360
- Route 721 (Newtown Road)
- Route 639 (Eastern View Road)
The temporary detour route is approximately 22 miles long. Signs and barricades are posted to direct travelers around the closure, as well as message boards.
Before today's closure, the bridge was posted with vehicle weight restrictions of 24 tons for single-unit vehicles and 40 tons for multi-unit vehicles.
An average of 295 vehicles a day cross the bridge on Dorrell Road/Spring Cottage Road, according to a VDOT traffic count. The 60-year-old bridge has two travel lanes, and is 198 feet long.
VDOT will announce an estimated timeline to reopen the bridge to traffic once the emergency repair project schedule is finalized.
